A recently retired man who had just celebrated his 40-year wedding anniversary was killed in a freak crash after ploughing into a pack of wild hogs on a dark road.

Roger Gregory Cummings, 63, from Marlow, Oklahoma, US, died after his car hit around 10 feral pigs in Stephens County, about 90 miles south of Oklahoma City.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol said Cummings was driving west late Wednesday night (September 2), or in the early hours of Thursday morning (September 3), when the animals crossed into his path. After smashing into the hogs, investigators believe he tried to swerve to avoid further impact.

His vehicle then reportedly veered off the left side of the road, tore through a ditch, crashed through a fence and entered a private field. The car continued along the fence line before rolling over multiple times.

Cummings was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected during the roll, the New York Post reported. His vehicle then came to rest on top of him, crushing him.

Troopers said he was already dead when emergency crews arrived. The heartbreaking timing has shocked his community.

An online obituary said Cummings had just celebrated both his 40th wedding anniversary with his wife, Soyna, and his retirement from Marlow Lumber Company, where he had worked for more than four decades, in June.

Marlow Lumber’s owner Barbara Johnson said the loss has devastated staff who knew him for years.

“Part of our family here,” she said, remembering Cummings. “We are all shocked and saddened by the news and our thoughts are with his wife and son,” Johnson told the Daily Mail.

Johnson said she noticed an ambulance heading to the crash site at around 9.30am on Thursday and feared the wreck may not have been spotted until hours later because it was dark and out of view.

This comes after a police officer’s daughter was killed in a freak road accident involving an alligator just days before she was set to follow in her dad’s footsteps and become a cop herself.

Cassi Taylor, 20, died on August 30 in Titusville, Florida, after her pick up truck overturned while she attempted to swerve to avoid a pileup, the Daily Star previously reported. She had been travelling behind a 58-year-old Canadian man who was driving a Mercedes-Benz E-350, local media reports.

The Canadian man suddenly hit an alligator on the road, crashing into it and killing it instantly.
