A pair of men have tragically lost their lives during this weekend’s Great North Run. Both runners, aged 25, collapsed during the 13.1 mile course in Newcastle.
A whopping 63,000 togged out for the half marathon on Sunday which celebrated it’s 45th anniversary this year. The heartbreaking news was confirmed in a statement on Monday by The Great Run Company.
The company stated: “It is with deep sadness that The Great Run Company can confirm the death of two participants at yesterday’s Great North Run. The two runners, both 25 year old males from the North East, collapsed at the event, and despite the very best efforts of our medical teams later passed away. In each case the cause of death will be determined in due course.
“Everyone involved in organising the Great North Run extends their heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of the two participants. We are continuing to support their families during this incredibly difficult time, and our thoughts and sympathies are with all those who loved and knew them. To respect the privacy of the families, no further details will be released.”
Prime Minister Andy Burhan ran the race this weekend, becoming the first sitting PM to do so. He said: “I’m running the Great North Run for Changing Lives because I’ve seen the difference they make with my own eyes.
“A few weeks back I visited Alex’s Place in Newcastle to launch our drive to offer everyone a route off the streets by Christmas. I sat down with residents over a cup of tea and heard what it actually takes to rebuild a life once you’ve lost everything – not just a roof, but people who stick with you while you find your feet again. That’s what Changing Lives does.”
Great North Run organiser said: “History will be made at the AJ Bell Great North Run today as the Rt Hon Andy Burnham MP becomes the first serving Prime Minster in the event’s 45 years to take on the world’s greatest half marathon whilst serving in office.”
In 2024, Sam Wealleans sadly died after falling ill during the Great North Run. The 29-year-old, from Newbiggin-by-the-Sea, was fundraising for mental health charity, Mind, in memory of his sister, Carly, and a close family friend, reports Chronicle Live.
