Debris from what appears to be an aerial drone has been found near a strategic military airbase, with a large-scale police search operation now underway
Wreckage from what seems to be an unmanned aerial drone has been discovered close to a crucial German military airfield.
The drone came down near Lake Steinhude, roughly one kilometre from the Wunstorf strategic military airbase, according to Ukrainian media reports.
German officials have launched an extensive police operation to retrieve fragments.
The base is home to Germany’s strategic air transport squadron of approximately 40 Airbus A400M cargo aircraft.
These planes are vital to both Germany and NATO’s strategic airlift operations, reports the Express.
A police spokesman confirmed there is no immediate ongoing threat to civilians.
The closeness of the crash location to the air facility has raised suspicions of potential sabotage.
It remains unclear who was operating the drone or whether its nearness to the airfield was intentional.
