Talented youngster Shea Lacey and Mason Mount put them in control after 10 minutes giving them a healthy lead, but it all went wrong when Brighton responded.
Brighton’s Kostoulas pulled one back on the stroke of half-time after a goalkeeping error from United’s Darlow, before the Seagulls struck twice more in the second half with goals from Pascal Gross and Maxim De Cuyper to stun Old Trafford into silence.

But it wasn’t silent on the airwaves as rival fans enjoyed themselves, laughing at the misfortune of the Red Devils. Donning a Gary Neville facemask, Chelsea fan Jason Cundy was back to his best – opening the show in fits of laughter.
He said: “It’s unbelievable. Has anyone seen Manchester United? Carrick what are you doing? Sir Alex? Fred the red?
“Can you hear me Andy Goldstein, Gary Neville, Gary Neville, Gary Neville, Gary Neville?
“Can you hear me the Old Trafford rat? Your boys took one hell of a beating.”
His hilarious rant continued for the entire start music and continued: “You took a two goal lead and lost 3-2 what on Earth is going on?”
The show then proceeded to play clown music as the rant continued: “What is happening in Manchester? What has happened to that club? They are slipping and sliding down.
“2-0 up and you can”t get it over the line.”
He then went on the reference the poor form they have found themselves in after a bad week for manager Carrick, after United lost to fiercest rivals Manchester City at the weekend with a controversial goal from Haaland.
Cundy continued: “If you’re a Manchester United fan now it’s probably the worst period ever. You went against your fiercest rival, had a man advantage and still couldn’t make it count.
“This football club is on its knees. Carrick wont make it to Christmas. He’s finding new lows.”
And it seems fans agreed.
Boos rang out at Old Trafford at full-time, with United fans singing: “What the f****** hell was that?” to their team.
Manager Michael Carrick admitted Manchester United’s capitulation was unacceptable, saying that answers had to be found at Fulham on Sunday.
He said at the final whistle: “We can’t accept that [the manner of the defeat] as a group. I take responsibility for it. The performance towards the end of the second half, that’s on me. We have a big game on Sunday that we have to prepare for. We’re out of this competition and we have to go back to winning football matches. It doesn’t feel good at the moment.”
