Ahead of his bombshell memoir being released next week, Earl Spencer has made further claims on the Royal Family with the latest extract on Prince Harry at Princess Diana’s funeral
Earl Spencer has continued his war of words with members of the Royal Family with the latest extract from his new book claiming a “lack of care” being shown to Prince Harry during his mother’s funeral.
Prince William and Harry were watched by the world as they walked behind Princess Diana’s coffin as the Earl has revealed how “this heartbroken child could be expected to deal with the agony”. He also claimed that Harry was “allowed to spin out of control”.
The Earl’s new book, Swan Song: Diana, My Sister, is published next week but bombshell extracts have been published in the lead up to its release by the Daily Mail. The earlier extracts prompted a statement from Buckingham Palace.
Earl Spencer has made a series of damning claims about the King in a new memoir chronicling his sister Diana that prompted an “unprecedented” response from Buckingham Palace who said “the pain of fraternal grief can cloud reason”.
The latest extract in the Mail is regarding the events of Diana’s funeral and how he watched both Harry and William take part, after insisting his siter would not have wanted them to walk behind the coffin.
The Earl shared his seven words of reassurance to Harry in a brief moment away from the spotlight. The extract in the Mail said: “Relieved that nobody could see us here, I quickly leant across to Harry, and gave him an encouraging hug. ‘Well done, Harry!’ I said. ‘You’re doing bloody brilliantly!”
While remembering travelling to Althorp on the Royal Train, the Earl said in The Mail that he was “concerned at the lack of obvious care for Harry” following the walk.
He continued: “He needed Diana’s hugs, of course, and they would forever be denied him. But instead of calm and nurture, he was allowed to spin out of control.
“I have often looked back, reckoning that a more caring hand at such points as this would have helped him enormously in the future. Instead, he seemed so very alone in his despair and torment.”
The Palace has yet to respond to the latest claims but issued a statement on the book earlier this week. A Palace spokesperson said “fraternal grief can cloud reason”.
