He’s no grouch Andy Murray is focused on a new career in cycling, although he doesn’t need the helmet when it involves building a new LEGO set
You never lose that competitive edge, even in retirement and the same can be said for former Wimbledon champ Andy Murray.
The British No1 has swapped tennis whites for cycling shorts to get his kicks these days, and is preparing for a major bike challenge although it’s not nearly as strenuous as it sounds. Murray has in fact teamed up with the LEGO Group for entirely different type of challenge… the LEGO Icons Road Bike.
Murray may have a reputation for being “boring” but it is actually a running joke that he’s leaned into, and his deadpan humour shines in a playful ‘mockumentary’ style video, to encourage adults to rediscover the joy, creativity and sense of achievement that can so easily get left as we grow up.
The video content sees Andy prepare for what appears to be a major cycling ride only to discover he’s been hiding in the spare room used as his build station to make the LEGO Icons Road Bike.
With the legendary focus, determination and competitive spirit you’d expect from a tennis champion. It’s a brilliant glimpse of Andy away from the tennis court, and a joyful reminder that whatever you’re into there’s a LEGO set out there for you – ready and waiting to awaken your joy.
Andy loves LEGO so much he even has a LEGO cat that he pets along the way.
Andy commented: “I’m used to chasing wins on the tennis court, but this was a completely different kind of challenge, to be honest. Building the LEGO Icons Road Bike set requires a lot of focus and quite a bit of patience.
“It’s pretty similar to a tough training session, which is probably why I ended up enjoying it so much. When you finally finish it, you get that unexpected feeling of just pure, simple joy, really. The fun is definitely in the build”.
Murray’s well-documented refusal to let even the smallest wins go uncelebrated, both turned loose on 1,015 LEGO bricks.
While growing up brings plenty of responsibilities, it shouldn’t mean growing out of joyful experiences. And if anyone knows a thing or two about taking things seriously, it’s Andy.
