BBC veteran David Dimbleby has said Princess Diana was “deeply resented” at Buckingham Palace, as Earl Spencer’s book Swan Song sheds new light on the Royal Family’s treatment of Diana
A BBC legend has weighed in this week on the controversy engulfing Buckingham Palace and Princess Diana. The past few days have witnessed multiple revelations about Diana’s life and death surface, as her brother Earl Charles Spencer has had excerpts from his upcoming memoir ‘Swan Song’ published in The Daily Mail.
Various damaging allegations and assertions from the book have already emerged, including the claim that King Charles – who was Prince at the time of his former wife’s death – informed Earl Spencer that the world would “forget” Diana “soon enough”. Diana’s sibling also claimed in his memoir that the King acted like a “lottery winner” after Diana’s passing.
The Palace issued a statement this week suggesting that bereavement can affect “reason, judgment and memory”.
Now, a former BBC presenter has stepped forward declaring that the Palace “resented” Princess Diana, making a startling four-word statement blaming her character as the reason, reports the Manchester Evening News.
According to The Daily Mail, David Dimbleby said: “That was deeply resented”, reports the Express.
Speaking on BBC Radio 4, the seasoned broadcaster explained: “Diana was the prime example of someone who didn’t act like the rest of the Royal Family – she was fresh, new and exciting to the public and they really adored her.
“And that was deeply resented in the Palace. And still is. And this kind of tit for tat over who said what, and only two people know what was actually said just reignites all that.”
He continued: “People are fascinated and I think whenever any tittle tattle reaches the public domain, people sort of think about it in terms of their own families.
“They all have problems and then suddenly… this family that is set up on a pedestal of being leaders of the country – they have problems too.”
The full book “Swan Song” hits shelves on 22 September, and is anticipated to contain further explosive revelations. It remains to be seen whether the Palace will release any further responses.
