Residents have reported their properties shaking and thunderous bangs after a minor earthquake struck a Lancashire area this morning )September 21).
The British Geological Survey (BGS) logged a 2.7 magnitude tremor close to Silverdale at 8.38am today. The earthquake occurred at approximately 3km depth and was experienced across Silverdale and surrounding areas.
According to the BGS, witness accounts detailed a “loud boom with weak shaking for a couple of seconds”. Another account characterised it as “like a really strong explosion, rattled the doors and windows”, while a third individual said it “sounded like a lorry crashing into the house”.
The seismic activity triggered a wave of responses on Facebook, with locals from neighbouring districts sharing their experiences, reports Lancs Live.
One resident enquired: “Was that another earthquake?”.
A homeowner on Coach Road in Warton responded: “We are on coach road in Warton the entire house shook defo felt like the biggest so far!”
Another said: “Thought a truck had smashed into my house, was intense.”
Someone else wrote: “I wondered what the heck was going on – been running round the house trying to see if a tree fell over!”.
A different Facebook user on Main Street said: “Two massive bangs and the whole house shook”.
Others reported sensing the tremor from greater distances, with one individual remarking: “I felt it in Morecambe”, while another said: “Felt it Milnthorpe.”
The BGS logged the tremor at 54.166° North and -2.830° East, with the epicentre close to Silverdale. The quake was detected at 8.38am 48 seconds UTC, registering a magnitude of 2.7 ML at a depth of 3km.
The seaside area has experienced multiple minor earthquakes throughout the last 18 months, with experts linking the seismic activity to prehistoric fault lines running beneath the locality.
