Denmark international and former Premier League star Christian Eriksen has failed to address his footballing future after the midfielder has not played since he collapsed on the pitch in June this year
Former Man Utd and Spurs star Christian Eriksen has seen his contract at German club VfL Wolfsburg terminated by mutual agreement just weeks after he collapsed on the pitch.
Eriksen has not played football since he suffered a second on-pitch collapse of his career in a friendly for Denmark against Ukraine back in June.
The incident sparked huge concern from fans and players on both sides after the 34-year-old previous collapsed during a cardiac arrest in a Euro 2020 match against Finland in 2021.
On this occasion, the midfielder quickly regained consciousness after his implanted cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) delivered a shock. However, Eriksen has not returned to football since.
Eriksen issued a statement saying the decision was so he could be “close to my family in Denmark” but he failed to mention a decision on his football future.
In a statement on the club’s website, Eriksen said: “Right now, it’s important for me to be close to my family in Denmark. I’m happy that we were able to find a solution together. My time in Wolfsburg was marked by many highs and lows.
“I know that the club is now in good hands to make the journey back to the Bundesliga, and I’m convinced that VfL has a successful future ahead of it. I would like to sincerely thank everyone who supported me at VfL and in Wolfsburg. It was a great pleasure to play for you, and I will fondly remember this time.”
Eriksen, who only signed with the German club a year ago, made a total of 34 appearances for VfL Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga, the DFB Cup, and the relegation play-offs. He scored three goals and providing ten assists during last season.
Fans have been concerned for Eriksen following the incident in June with some expressing for the star to retire. Eriksen managed to get back to his best after the incident in 2021 with the help of Brentford, which saw him earn a move to Man Utd.
However, now his future in the game remains uncertain as he leaves VfL Wolfsburg after leaving a “lasting impression” on the club.
VfL Wolfsburg Managing Director of Sport Dieter Hecking said: “It was clear to us that the decision about his future lay with Christian. We wanted to give him that freedom in this particular situation and have now granted his request to terminate his contract.
“He has already experienced and achieved a great deal in his extraordinary career. All the more remarkable is how approachable and down-to-earth we found him to be at VfL. Despite the short time, he left a lasting impression on his teammates, the staff, and the fans. We thank Christian and wish him and his family all the best.”
