Kiss and tell

It’s gradually dawning on me that my oldest mate is a horrible person.

She’s sneaky, calculating and mean. She avoids paying her share during nights out. She uses guys for sex and then kisses and tells. Last year she slept with my brother and humiliated the man with her post-coital put downs.

She thinks she can do anything she likes without ever considering the thoughts or feelings of others. Recently she shagged her newly married ex boss and then bragged about him being a ‘sexual let down’ on social media. She mocked the man and his new wife is in pieces.

She argues for discounts in restaurants and shops and gossips about people who care about her. I dread to think what she says about me behind my back.

She was a nightmare on a recent trip to Barcelona. She ‘forgot’ to take her credit card. She now owes me £400 but has never mentioned paying me back.

My sister says she never wants her coming out with us again. How do I handle this?

JANE SAYS: Be in no doubt: your friend knows exactly what she’s doing. She didn’t forget her credit card by accident. It’s unfortunate that she’s such a devious individual, but now that the scales have fallen from your eyes, you need to decide where you go from here.

List every penny she owes you and present her with the bill. Front her up; shame her and leave her in no doubt that that game is up. The chances are you might not get your cash back, but you can’t stick with someone who has so little regard for you.

Dump her before she steals anymore of your energy – and cash. Just because you’ve known her for a long time doesn’t mean that she is entitled to your loyalty.

Surely that cruel stunt with your brother was the final straw?

Bossy boots

My bloke bosses people around at work – and thinks he can do the same at home.

He questions my spending, he dictates who can and can’t visit but, most of all, he talks to our teenage kids (15 and 17) like a sergeant major – and they hate him for it. He’s definitely getting worse. The higher he climbs the corporate ladder, the more unbearable he is around us.

When we married, he was sweet and funny, now I hardly recognise him. At the moment we’ve locked horns over him banning my Mum from our house. How dare he?

JANE SAYS: Tell him to leave his attitude in the workplace and start being a proper husband and dad once he comes home – otherwise he’s in danger of losing everything from your respect to, potentially, this marriage. Okay, he may be under pressure to get results and earn money but where is the love or nurturing?

If he’s struggling with a tough life, then he needs to talk about that so that you can love and support him. He needs to hear that you are not the enemy.

What is his problem with your mum and why can’t he treat your kids with kindness? Does he need to speak to his GP regarding his stress levels? Promise to support him but make it clear that you won’t be crushed.
