Toast isn’t just a breakfast staple, it’s an easy snack at any time of day, whether you’re hungry between meals or fancy something quick before bed. But there’s nothing worse than burnt toast, which tastes horrible and can leave the whole house smelling of smoke.

Thankfully, the worry about burning toast could soon be a thing of the past thanks to a futuristic new toaster that uses clever technology to keep a close eye on each slice of bread. The Sage Eye Q Auto Toaster uses optical sensors to monitor the colour of your toast and automatically stops cooking when it reaches your chosen shade.

This high-end toaster is available in two sizes, with the Eye Q 850 Auto 2 Slice currently retailing at £279.95 for Noir or £249.95 for Brushed Stainless Steel, and the larger Eye Q 870 Auto 4 Slice priced at £399.95 for Noir or £349.95 for Brushed Stainless Steel. Instead of deciding how long your bread should toast for, customers can choose from seven different shades using the Toast Shade Selector.

The toaster then keeps tabs on the bread and automatically pops it up once it’s reached the desired level of browning. The Eye Q’s optic sensors, powered by Sage’s Sensability Technology, track colour changes in real time, ensuring consistent results without the need for users to keep checking their toast.

It’s also capable of adapting to different types of bread. A dedicated Sourdough Mode caters for the thicker crust and dense middle of artisan loaves, while Crumpet Mode directs more heat towards the top of a crumpet for more even browning.

Available in different colours and sizes, this toaster is equipped with a colour selector so users can choose what shade they want their toast to be.

For those who prefer their toast with a bit more colour, Sage’s ‘A Bit More’ function provides an extra touch of browning, while the Timer Mode disables the optic sensors and lets the device operate using conventional timed heating – perfect for warming pastries and other treats. The toaster also automatically lowers and lifts bread for hands-free use and can cope with frozen bread without needing to select a separate defrost setting, reports the Express.

Sage has crafted the Eye Q with maintenance in mind, with a non-stick ceramic-coated top that helps stop crumbs from getting baked onto the surface, while its Clearway Cavity directs crumbs down into a removable Catch All Crumb Tray. Both the two and four-slice versions come in Brushed Stainless Steel and Noir finishes, with integrated cord storage helping maintain tidy kitchen worktops.

Another sought-after choice is the Kitchenaid Artisan 2-Slice Toaster in ink blue for £269 at Currys. This model features a defrost function, extra-wide slots, a bagel function and a reheat option, giving customers plenty of versatility to play with.

Robert Dyas then stocks the Zwilling Enfinigy Toaster in black for £148.99. This particular model boasts four slots, eight individual heating elements and balanced heat distribution, based on the product details.

While there weren’t any specific reviews for the latest Sage toasters, customers have flocked to Trustpilot to voice their opinions about the brand. One shopper remarked: “Very satisfied with the resolution to an issue with a great product. The 4 slice smart toaster is streets ahead of its competition.”

Another added: “I own a Sage toaster and Sage Barista Express coffee machine, which have been fantastic for many years. Needed some further advice, so phoned Sage for a second time in a week, needing to check something and was assisted by Hope, who was fantastic. She was superbly friendly, knowledgeable, had a great sense of humour and offered excellent customer service. In addition to the call, Hope also emailed me with the guidance.”

However, not everyone was entirely convinced, with one customer noting: “Good customer service. Faulty toaster replaced immediately. Although it did take a while to setup the online account to facilitate this.”

On the whole, the majority appeared satisfied. For instance, another buyer commented: “Very easy to deal with, everyone we spoke to was professional and friendly, answering all of our questions. The order processing was quick and efficient, and the new toaster arrived within a day of ordering it. What a great product, what a great service – thank you.”
