President Donald Trump on Friday dismissed the possibility of Democrats regaining control of Congress in November, saying he’s become used to being impeached.
Speaking with reporters outside the White House on Friday before departing for his rally in Alabama, Trump was asked what a third impeachment would mean for him.
“Well, I don’t know, but I’m getting good at it,” Trump said. “It’s a fake impeachment, and we could’ve done that with ‘Sleepy’ Joe [Biden], but we didn’t do it because it wouldn’t have been appropriate. I could’ve done that with Hillary Clinton, as you know. I had the chance to do it if I wanted, and I said, ‘That would be inappropriate,’ but with me, they like to do it.”
The Senate acquitted Trump both times.
The president’s mention of Clinton during his answer on Friday echoed sentiments expressed by then-Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) — who claimed impeaching Trump once he was already out of office could set a precedent for doing the same to the former secretary of state.
On the midterms, which could set the stage for a third Trump impeachment, Democrats currently hold a nine-point lead on the Congressional generic ballot, according to Silver Bulletin.
Trump’s approval rating also signals possible trouble for Republicans, as he currently sits at a 37% approval and 61% disapproval, according to averages compiled by The New York Times.
