Brits will drink nearly 57,000 cups of coffee over the course of their adult lives – including 8,000 americanos, 6,000 lattes and 5,800 flat whites. A study of 2,000 adults revealed 43% say their morning coffee is one of the best parts of their day.

One cup is rarely enough, with coffee drinkers getting through an average of 2.5 mugs of coffee on a typical day. But 7% admit to having as many as five cups or more in a single day. The average coffee drinker also spends more than 92 hours a year – the equivalent of nearly four full days – making and enjoying a cup of coffee.

The research was commissioned by Lavazza to mark the launch of its new coffee product, Tablì. Tablì is a 100% coffee tab, no plastic or aluminium capsule.

To celebrate, the brand is bringing Tablì to London’s Oxford Street from Tuesday 13th October until Sunday 18th October, with a free immersive experience at Future Stores. More than 10,000 free drinks available throughout the week.

The study also found 40% of coffee drinkers wouldn’t dream of skipping their morning brew.

For 16% it’s a non-negotiable part of their morning – 18% consider it to be more important than taking a shower – with most reaching for their first brew between 7am and 8am.

When it comes to what people enjoy most about making coffee, 43% said it’s a comforting part of their morning routine, while 36% view it as a moment of calm and 34% use it to prepare before they start their day.

The taste (52%), the first sip of a steaming cup (34%) and the aroma of freshly brewed coffee (27%) all top the list of what people most enjoy about having a brew.

Coffee drinkers certainly have strong opinions about what shouldn’t go in their cup though, as the research, carried out via OnePoll, found 28% think sugary syrups should be banned.

Nearly a quarter (23%) consider very milky coffee a no-go and 22% would avoid adding whipped cream on top.

Emanuele Pellegrino, UK & Nordics regional director at Lavazza, said: “Clearly, we are a nation of coffee lovers.

“But whether people prefer their coffee short and intense, long and smooth or with milk, what matters is being able to enjoy quality coffee exactly the way you like it at home.

“We know coffee is an unmissable part of the day for more and more people, and our goal with Tablì was to use our 130 plus years of coffee passion and expertise, to reimagine the ritual of making and savouring a perfect cup every time.

“This revolutionary system, with its 100% unique coffee tab, aims to retain the convenience and quality consistency of single serve but puts coffee front and centre, so you can see, smell and feel the coffee even before you start brewing.”
