It’s thought the monkey has done this before – and could not be shooed away or coaxed from the vodka with biscuits by staff – but has now been taken to a zoo for vet checks
The moment a monkey downed half a bottle of vodka in an off-license before pasing out n the shop has been caught on camera. Employees at the liquor shop in eastern India tried to shoo the monkey away after the primate is said to have barged in without warning last week. They held out biscuits to distract it — but the monkey ignored them.
Moments later, the monkey picked up a bottle of vodka, cracked it open and drank. It then climbed on some boxes and fell fast asleep, leaving staff to work and customers to shop around the animal as it snored.
Onlookers were stunned and pulled out their phones to film the scene. Videos of the incident show customers coming into the shop to buy drink and staff carrying on with their normal duties while the monkey slept in the background.
Locals and shop owners said this was not the animal’s first taste. According to them, the monkey has been seen over the past few days licking leftover alcohol from discarded bottles.
In many parts of India, monkeys are a common sight in towns and cities, and they regularly snatch food and other items from shops and homes.
Wildlife experts generally warn against feeding them, as it can make the animals bolder around people. The incident happened at Ormanjhi Chowk in Ranchi, the capital of Jharkhand state around 265 miles from the border with Bangladesh.
According to reports, the monkey was taken from the shop by wildlife workers to the nearby Birsa Biological Park for veterinary checks. Its condition is not yet known.
