A magnitude 7.7 earthquake has struck Panama, triggering tsunami warnings across nine countries and causing buildings to collapse

Tsunami alerts have been issued and hospitals evacuated following a catastrophic earthquake in a country.

The 7.7 magnitude earthquake hit Panama around 3pm local time, prompting tsunami warnings in nine countries – Panama, Mexico, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Peru and El Salvador. As per the USGS, the quake occurred 12km west south west of Pitaloza Arriba.

The magnitude of the quake was initially reported at an on the Richter scale 8, it was later downgraded to 7.7. At this stage, it’s uncertain whether there have been any casualties.

The earthquake took place 12km west south west of Pitaloza Arriba, in southern Panama. Concerns are mounting that individuals may be trapped under the debris of collapsed buildings in Panama. Local residents are reportedly assisting emergency services in sifting through the rubble.

Several hospitals across Panama have been evacuated in the wake of the earthquake.

Both runways at Panama’s main international airport have been shut down following the natural disaster.

Petrified locals have expressed their terror at the quake.

Rosendo Dominguez, 60, from Herrera province, said: “We felt it very strongly. It knocked things over in the kitchen, but we’re okay, though we’re very scared.”

Dominguez added: “Everyone is outside, scared.”

The Colombian president has pledged his support to Panama in the wake of the earthquake, assuring them they are “not alone”.

Abelardo De La Espriella posted on X: “I express my deepest solidarity and affection to the brotherly people of Panama and their government during these difficult times following the powerful earthquake.”

“Colombia stands with the Panamanian nation in this adversity. We are united by history, brotherhood, and bonds of friendship that are strengthened especially in times of hardship. Panama is not alone!

“You can count on Colombia’s support and our full willingness to provide any assistance you may need. A fraternal embrace to all.”

A tsunami warning has been issued for nine countries following a potent earthquake in Panama.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre has issued alerts to Panama, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Perú, Nicaragua, Guatemala, El Salvador and México.
