A world champion boxer has died at the age of 69 and emotional tributes are now flooding in
The one-time World Boxing Organization president, Paco Valcarcel, has confirmed the death of a former world champion boxer at the age of 69.
Wilfredo Gomez, whose nickname was “bazooka”, had been dealing with brain damage and other medical issues over recent years. He is recognised as among the best Puerto Rican boxers of all time.
Valcarcel said on Saturday morning that Wilfredo “Bazuka” Gomez “passed away a few hours ago”. In a post on X translated from Spanish, the Puerto Rican described the deceased as “the one to whom I owe having entered the great family of International Boxing,” before adding: “Rest in peace, my eternal champion.”
