Bake Off followers are left in hysterics by disastrous Technical as Nigella Lawson jokes they need to ‘punish’ the contestants by making them eat their RAW flatbreads

In series of Bake Off past, Bread Week has proven to be the making, or breaking, of some contestants, and this year proved to be no different.

A turbulent Technical challenge saw all of the remaining bakers’ attempts fall short, with even judge Nigella Lawson joking they should be forced to eat their creations as a punishment.

In Tuesday’s episode, the contestants were tasked with baking eight flatbreads with a grape and blue cheese filling.

However, the tight cooking time, just one hour, would prove tricky, and in most cases, it led to the flatbreads being left raw.

Paul and Nigella were unimpressed by the creations, with the bread expert noting that all of the bakers should have made their bakes ‘paper thin.’

He said: ‘What we’re looking for in the flatbread challenge is… not this.

Tuesday’s Bake Off saw one of the most disastrous Technical challenges in the show’s history, with Nigella Lawson even joking the contestants should be ‘punished’

The tight cooking time meant that nearly all of the flatbreads were undercooked, and even Paul Hollywood said it was the ‘worst’ technical challenge he’d ever seen

‘[…] Probably the worst technical I think I have ever seen in 17 years.’

After judging the bakes, Nigella quipped that as a ‘punishment’ the bakers should be made to eat them.

Viewers praised Nigella’s quick reaction, and joked she and Paul must have headed ‘to the chippy’ after their disappointing lunch.

They wrote on X: ‘I think Paul and Nigella went to the chippy after that round. Barely had anything to eat;

‘Paul and Nigella judging the technical…;’

‘Every single baker on Bake Off has just made the WRONG thing for the technical, everything is raw, Nigella Lawson is panicking and just said ”as a punishment we should make them eat it.’

Nigella has proven to be a huge hit for Bake Off fans, with viewers particularly praising her attitude to food.

The Domestic Goddess replaced Prue Leith for the 2026 series of the Channel 4 baking contest, joining longstanding judge Paul, 60.

Fans have complimented the fresh judging dynamic Nigella has brought to the competition, pointing out that she isn’t afraid to disagree with show veteran Paul.

The TV chef has also been praised for the vocabulary she uses to describe food, winning plaudits from nutritionists for her ‘anti-diet’ language whilst also sparking viral memes dedicated to her penchant for taking large bites of the bakes.

Taking to X during Tuesday’s new episode, one viewer said: ‘The biggest triumph of Nigella on Bake Off is how she brings what genuinely feels like a real LOVE of every bite she takes. Laugh at how she might eat all you want, I just see someone enjoying every mouthful and it’s JOYOUS.’

‘Obsessed with the nigella lawson cultural attitudes about food revolution we’re in like let’s goooo,’ agreed another.

‘Go on Nigella! She’s like a child at a party. Tucking in to all that’s on offer.’

One more said: ‘Nigella showing up on Bake Off and immediately knocking Paul off his throne and being anti diet culture language oh that’s my QUEEN.’

During last week’s episode Nigella was praised for criticising Paul for referring to a cookie as ‘indulgent and naughty’.

‘I don’t approve of talking about food as naughty. We need to take our pleasures where we can in life,’ she told her co-judge.

Viewers applauded the moment with one fan writing on Reddit: ‘I love that she doesn’t talk about guilt. I hate hearing someone try something and immediately it’s about calories or our hips or shame.’

‘Instead she talks about how it’s pleasurable to try something. She gives a detailed description. And her only mention of the physical effects is a comment that she lifts weights. She figured out what works for her. I think she’s awesome.’

Nigella admitted last month that she had ‘many reservations’ about joining Bake Off.

Speaking on The One Show, she explained: ‘When I had my first meeting with them, I had a long list of why I shouldn’t do it, because I felt like I had to make it clear that I am not a technical baker. I’m a home baker.’

‘I didn’t want them to feel they’d come to the wrong shop. I wanted to say what I felt I could do and what I felt I couldn’t do.

‘And I said, there’ll be no hard feelings after this meeting, if you feel I’m not what you need because I think there’s nothing more anxiety-provoking than thinking that people expect something from you that you can’t give, and I don’t ever want to be a fake person and pretend I know something I don’t.’

She continued: ‘I came to baking late in life. You know, I wrote, it was meant to be ironically titled How to Be a Domestic Goddess when I was 40, so I hadn’t really baked because I was a cook.

‘Then I thought, this is easy. I don’t know why everyone pretends it’s so difficult, which is true if it’s home baking. You know, you can make it simple, and what interests me is taste and texture.’

Praising Paul and his baking talent, she said: ‘Paul is a genius, and he does it. He just looks at a cake and he says that needed to be another five degrees hotter and three minutes longer. And he knows all that.

‘What I feel like I can do is eat, and then try and explain what the taste is like or what the texture is like for people who are home. But I just think I wanted them to know that that’s it.’

Also making sure to compliment his TV other half, Paul added: ‘And you can tell she imparts that beautifully, though. You can see it on Bake Off.’
