A school in Northumberland has been evacuated by police over safety concerns as members of the public have been warned to avoid the area. Emergency services arrived at Coquet Community School in Amble on Friday morning (October 16).

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “Shortly after 9am today (Friday) we were contacted about a report of malicious communications relating to a school on Acklington Road in the Amble area of Northumberland. Emergency services are at the scene and we are investigating the matter further.

“As a precaution, the management of the school have made the decision to evacuate the building. We would ask that the public avoid the area at this time.”

The school’s headteacher James Andriot posted a message on the school’s social media channels.

He said: “We have had to evacuate the school following some information from the police with regard to a potential safety threat in the new building.

“All children and staff are currently in the old JCSC sports hall. I am working with the police to manage the potential threat and will update you as soon as I have more information.

“If you want to collect your child, please park in the old JCSC carpark and there will be a member of staff available to organise the handover of your child. There is no known threat to the safety of pupils at the old site.”

Andriot said the school will be closed for the rest of the day, with police conducting a lengthy search of the building.

He said: “I have therefore taken the decision to close the school for the rest of the day and send pupils home. As the main site is off limits we cannot feed any pupils over lunchtime.”

Stressed that “all pupils and staff are safe and well”, he added: “Clearly the safety of everyone at school is our absolute priority.”
