A British holidaymaker has died after falling down a stairwell at a hostel in Spain. Lee Jowitt, 41, from London, was staying in Tarragona with a friend when the tragedy happened.

He is understood to have fallen through the stairwell from a height equivalent to a third floor at accommodation on Carrer de la Unió. Staff called the emergency number 112 after discovering how seriously he had been hurt, according to local newspaper Diari de Tarragona.

The newspaper reported that personnel from Catalonia’s Medical Emergency System tried to resuscitate him, while a doctor who lived nearby was among the first to help.

Lee died at the scene in the early hours of October 11, as reported by NeedToKnow.

The Mossos d’Esquadra, Catalonia’s regional police force, opened an investigation into the circumstances. Initial reports indicated the fall was accidental.

Lee had reportedly travelled to the coastal city for a weekend break with a British friend who lives in Barcelona. They had returned to the hostel shortly after midnight.

His devastated sister, Shivaun Jowitt, paid tribute to him on Facebook.

She wrote: “I don’t know how I will ever process this he was only 41 why is this world so cruel.”

Shivaun added: “Rest in peace you were one of a kind, truly special. I love you so so much and our special memories will live with me forever.”

Friends have launched an appeal to help bring Lee’s body home to the UK and pay for his funeral.

Organiser, Richard, described him as a “much-loved friend, colleague and brother” whose death had left many people heartbroken.

The appeal said donations would go directly to Shivaun, with any money left after the cost of bringing Lee home put towards his funeral.
