March 16th, 1996: Frank Bruno lands a rare punch on Mike Tyson’s chin during the WBC world title fight in Las Vegas on March 16th, 1996.

FROM the early days of bare-knuckle fighting, this country has always – pardon the pun – punched above its weight in the boxing ring. And even now, in 2026, some of the biggest names in the sport are from these shores.

The fact Tyson Fury’s much-anticipated clash with Anthony Joshua in Cardiff sold out in under an hour, with 500,000 people waiting in the virtual queue, shows how passionate this nation is for action in the ring.

Our new special edition celebrates the achievements of our boxing heroes in the ring.

From the Beast from Brum Owen Morgan, the Mighty Atom Jimmy Wilde and Wee Benny Lynch, through to Randy Turpin, Our ‘Enry and Tartan hero Ken Buchanan and into the more recent past with Frank Bruno, Lennox Lewis, Ricky Hatton and Joe Calzaghe – to name just a few.

We also take a look at the amazing battles that have turned our fighters into sporting icons, such as Eubank v Benn, Cooper v Clay and Lloyd Honeyghan v Donald Curry.

Picking out a select few as our legends was never going to be an easy task, and – as always in sport – could create a discussion or two. Many of the fighters had checkered lives away from the sport. But with the blood, sweat and tears they shed in the ring, there is no getting away from the fact they all deserve the status of boxing legends.

There are world champions galore, inspirational stories, unbelievable tales and memories to be relived.
