Brogno, who played professionally for 16 years, had been battling with liver cancer for the past few months. His daughter broke the tragic news in a Facebook post while paying tribute to the “best dad”.

Brogno’s personal career highlight came back the 1999/2000 season when he became Belgian First Division’s top scorer with 30 goals in just 32 appearances.

The amazing goalscoring form earned him a place in Belgium’s Euro 2000 squad, but he sadly never would appear at the tournament. He only would make seven appearances for Belgium, despite his lengthy club career.

His former clubs, including the likes of Charleroi and KVC Westerlo in Belgium, have also issued tributes and sent condolences to his family.

KVC Westerlo, where Brogno spent six years, hailed him as one of their “iconic figures”. They wrote: “It is with great sadness that KVC Westerlo has learned of the passing of Toni Brogno. The former striker and one of the iconic figures of our club has passed away at the age of 53.

“With the passing of Toni Brogno, KVC Westerlo has lost not only a former top scorer, but also a true club legend. Someone who left a lasting mark on our club and will forever hold a special place in the history of KVC Westerlo.

“The entire KVC Westerlo family extends its deepest condolences to his family, friends and loved ones during this difficult time. Rest in peace, Toni. Forever a Kemphaan.”

Charleroi, where Brogno enjoyed two stints at the club, said: “Toni, we will miss you in our memories. It is with immense sadness that Sporting de Charleroi has learned of the passing of Toni Brogno.
