A “funny” and “strong-minded” mum from Cardiff has tragically passed away alongside her unborn child in Nigeria. Claire Chadwick and her unborn baby girl both lost their lives after she encountered serious medical complications at 37 weeks pregnant.

Claire, 40, had been residing in Nigeria in recent years, having relocated there to be with her husband. Her sister Shannon, based in Newport, revealed that Claire had built a new life for herself in the country, launching a TikTok channel with her husband that amassed thousands of followers.

The couple shared videos documenting their daily lives, including their faith and food challenges. Shannon said her sister will be remembered for “her huge personality”.

She said: “She was funny, loved dancing and being silly, and never particularly cared what anyone thought of her. She was fiercely strong-minded, always stood up for what she believed in and wasn’t afraid to speak her mind. Those who knew and loved her will have their own special memories of the person she was.”

Claire devastatingly passed away after her unborn baby died in the womb, subsequently developing sepsis and ultimately succumbing to septic shock, reports Wales Online.

Shannon revealed that her family now faces the gut-wrenching task of bringing Claire and her baby girl back to south Wales to be laid to rest. A fundraising page has been set up, already collecting £10,000 to help make this possible.

“More than anything, we want them both returned so they can be laid to rest with dignity, surrounded by the family who love them,” Shannon explained. She revealed that Claire is survived by her 19-year-old son, who resides in Wales, alongside her husband and extended family “who loved her dearly”.

“She was a woman who lived her life in her own way and she will leave a lasting impression on everyone who knew her,” Shannon remarked.

She noted that the reaction to the GoFundMe page, which you can access here, has been “overwhelming”. She also expressed gratitude to REST, a Welsh charity which provides support to bereaved families whose loved ones have passed away abroad in sudden or tragic circumstances.

A Foreign Office spokeswoman said: “We are supporting the family of a British woman who has died in Nigeria.”
