A “much-loved” dad was crushed to death by a punch bag machine after it was “pushed over on him” during a row. Shopkeeper Abdo Ali, 52, suffered a serious head injury after an altercation in Toxteth, Liverpool, on October 29.

Cops were called at around 7pm to a row of shops in Berkley Street following reports of a disturbance and said that it is alleged the punching bag machine was pushed over, landing on a “bystander”.

Abdo, who was the owner of Shop and Save Mini Market, was taken to hospital where he was left fighting for his life. Tragically, he died on Monday, police said.

Abdo’s heartbroken family said the dad-of-five was well known in the local community and he had a “heart of gold”. In a statement issued via police, they said he was “a man with a heart of gold,” the Liverpool Echo reports.

They added: “As the much-loved owner of Shop and Save Mini Market, he was more than just a shopkeeper; he was a familiar face, a friend and a source of laughter to so many in the community.

“His kindness, generosity and charitable nature touched countless lives, always willing to help anyone in need.

A police cordon was in place around Bon Cafe and Katma Barber, where the disturbance is alleged to have begun. Pictures taken the following morning showed forensic officers inside the barber shop. A white evidence tent was also seen in front of the café.

Iliasse Alhag, 22, has been charged with affray, assault and wounding without intent. He appeared in court on November 2, and was remanded ahead of his next appearance on November 30. Detectives continue to appeal for witnesses.
