Britain is bracing itself for a deep freeze, with one region forecast to bear the brunt of heavy snowfall, according to newly released weather maps. Forecasts from WXCharts indicate that November 20 is set to be a particularly bitter day across the country, with the mercury plunging below 0C in numerous regions.

This comes on the back of a dramatic drop in temperatures over recent weeks, compounded by Storm Boelo battering the nation with gusts of up to 85mph and torrential downpours.

Snow is predicted to descend upon the Scottish Highlands towards the latter end of November, as indicated by the purple patch on the weather map. While snowfall is confined to that one area, the rest of the UK won’t escape the icy grip of winter, with a vast blue patch spreading from northern Scotland all the way down to the Midlands signalling widespread frosty conditions.

Temperatures are expected to fluctuate between -4C and 4C, though the bulk of the country will endure the chill, with much of Britain seeing readings between -2C and 0C.

Scotland is set to bear the coldest conditions, particularly across the Highlands, Aberdeenshire and Perth. England won’t be spared either, with areas including Cumbria, Northumberland and North Yorkshire bracing for some of the most biting temperatures, reports the Express.

The Met Office’s long-range forecast covering November 11 to November 20 warns that spells of rain and powerful winds are on the cards throughout the period. It states: “At the start of this period, outbreaks of rain across the south of the UK will clear away as clearer conditions spread from the north. A few wintry showers are likely in the far north, but otherwise this will mean a spell of fine and dry weather developing for most areas.

“Over the following weekend, a change to more unsettled weather is likely, with Atlantic frontal systems bringing rain and some strong winds. Unsettled or changeable weather is likely to continue through the following week. After a cold start, temperatures will probably be above average overall.”

In the meantime, Brits should be aware that the Met Office currently has a yellow weather warning in force from 9pm on November 6 until 11am on November 7.

The warning states that the Southeast of England is being hit by mist and patchy fog, which “is likely to allow increasingly widespread and, in places, dense fog to form”.

Drivers are urged to check their routes before heading out, make sure their fog lights are functioning correctly and switch them on when needed. Public transport services, including buses, trains, flights and ferries, could also face disruption.
