Oscar Pistorius is ‘model inmate’ with murderer bidding for prison release next month

Oscar Pistorius has been a model inmate in the decade since he killed model girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp – and could soon make a bid to be released.

The 36-year-old former Paralympian and Olympian sprinter, nicknamed Blade Runner, claimed to mistake Reeva for a home intruder back in 2013 and later received a five-year prison sentence for culpable homicide.

Pistorius was released on house arrest for a temporary period back in 2015 while his appeal was with the Supreme Court of Appeal of South Africa, who overturned his culpable homicide verdict and convicted him of murder.

With his prison sentence extended to six years and then to 15 after an appearance by the state, he will be eligible for parole in 2023 having been on his best behaviour.

The Mirror have reported details of his life in Atteridgeville prison, which was been described as a comfy low-security site.

It is added that Pistorius remains muscular and fit despite his career coming to an end – and can be seen driving a tractor around the prison farm.

One jail source said: “He has been seen driving a red tractor in fields around the prison, being trained to plough a straight furrow.

“The produce of the agriculture, including cauliflower, is then sold to help feed poverty-stricken schoolchildren.”

As a baby Pistorius had both legs amputated under the knee, finding fame while winning six Paralympic gold medals including the T44 100m in London in 2012.

He has served eight years of the 15 sentence for the murder of model Reeva, first spending time at Kgosi Mampuru II jail before moving to Atteridgeville in 2016.

Pistorius could even be released next month should his bid for parole be successful, but if it fails he could move to another site with his current home becoming a women-only prison.

It comes as the Steenkamp family remember their loved one a decade after her death, planning a ceremony at the beach where they scattered her ashes.

Back in 2021, Steenkamp’s parents June and Barry were set for a face-to-face meeting with her killer, having stated that they wanted him to serve a full sentence.

Reeva’s mother June told Good Morning Britain: “He’s shown no remorse and he would only show remorse I think if it contributes to his getting out of jail.

“He must serve whatever his full time, in my eyes, he still must pay for what he’s done. And that’s what we’re expecting.”
