UK to be plunged into chaos as rain batters Brits – however Bank Hols seems to be nice

Heavy rain could spell even more flooding and travel chaos today.

The miserable weather looks set to stay until a dry and fine Bank Holiday Monday finally brings some relief.

One person died in a mudslide at lunchtime today as rain battered Carlton-in-Cleveland, North Yorks, and the Met Office warned the worst of the weather was yet to come.

Meteorologist Alex Burkill said: “It is going to be a pretty wet picture for many places as we go through the rest of the week.”

The national meteorological service issued an amber alert across parts of north Wales and northwest England, including Liverpool and Manchester, until noon today.

A yellow warning for rain is in place for the north of England, the Midlands and north and mid Wales. The same warning runs until 6pm today in south and east Scotland.

Many places could see 30-40mm of rain, while the south of England could see that amount in three hours after being hit by heavy, thundery showers.

A Met Office spokeswoman said: “The precise track of the low pressure which would determine where the rainfall comes is still uncertain and is something we are keeping an eye on.

“We would encourage people to keep an eye on the forecast over the next couple of days to see how that evolves.”

Chief meteorologist Andy Page said areas exposed to the strengthening northerly winds are most likely to see the highest rainfall.

Northern areas are expected to remain cloudy and wet today but drier further south with brighter conditions becoming more widespread by the end of the week.

Bank Holiday Monday is expected to be dry and fine for much of the country, feeling warm in the sunshine, although there remains the threat of showers ahead of more settled conditions.
