Roland Garros is in full swing – but it’s break point for Emma Raducanu.

Raducanu, 21, has again opted to skip the French Open – wanting to focus on her fitness ahead of Wimbledon. The Brit said: “It’s important for me to keep laying on the foundations.

“And I will use the time to do a healthy block before the grass and subsequent hard-court seasons to give myself a chance to keep fit for the rest of the year!”

Raducanu’s meteoric rise in 2021 was cemented in Flushing Meadows when she was crowned the US Open winner, mere months after becoming a household name after her Wimbledon exploits.

2022 marked the youngster’s first year on the tour – and with her came her debut in Paris. Raducanu had already split from her coach her coach Torben Beltz ahead of the tournament – and she went into it recently linking up with a new hitting partner.

Raducanu’s first-round saw her partnered with Czech teenager Linda Noskova – and the pair put on a thriller. The Brit dropped the opening round, but battled back 7-5 6-1 on the clay.

“It was an absolute battle. I’m proud of the way I fought,” Raducanu said. “Linda really came out there firing and as soon as I dropped my ball speed she was all over me.

“It was really challenging in the second set – I’m really proud of how I fought but all props to Linda.”

However, her joy would be short lived – and Raducanu would crash out on the clay in the second round at the hands of Aliaksandra Sasnovich

It was an eye-opener for Raducanu, who cited the rigours of playing full-time against the world’s best players, with a constant stream of niggling injuries hampering her progress.

Amazingly, two years on her loss to Sasnovich remains her last match in the competition.
