French Open controversy noticed feminine tennis star requested to alter outfit by umpire

Tennis ace Camila Giorgi nearly overstepped the mark at the 2022 French Open when her outfit choice caused a stir among officials.

The Italian was confronted by the umpire just before her third-round match against Aryna Sabalenka in Paris due to a logo disagreement. Wimbledon isn’t the only tournament with strict dress codes; all the majors have their own sartorial standards to uphold.

The bone picked by officials on this occasion was a sponsorship logo for kitchen appliance brand DeLonghi that caught the eyes of the powers that be. Giorgi, 32, faced a last-minute wardrobe change directive right as she hit the clay for one of her most pivotal matches.

Caught off guard at the time, the WTA Tour stalwart protested to the official: “I don’t have any change, this is my only dress. I played with it before.”

Giorgi had indeed sported the same style of dress earlier in the tournament but without the contentious DeLonghi branding. She was allowed to continue and went on to stage an impressive comeback to topple Sabalenka 4-6, 6-1, 6-0.

Perhaps the logo brought some fortune given Giorgi’s run ended in the following round, when the DeLonghi logo was nowhere to be seen. She bowed out to Daria Kasatkina in straight sets, marking the end of her career-best campaign at Roland Garros.

Giorgi has since hung up her tennis racket and retired in May to chase other passions. Specifically, she seems to have committed herself to the world of modelling and fashion, shocking fans with some rather daring poses in recent times.

She also caused a stir at Wimbledon 2023 when her unconventional attire, adorned with white lace sleeves, attracted a lot of attention. Fans were largely taken aback by Giorgi’s creativity as she adhered to the dress code while still managing to stand out in a more positive manner.

Her triumph over Sabalenka was all the more remarkable considering the unexpected controversy that erupted just before their match got underway. It seems apt that fans are now more intrigued than ever by what Giorgi wears in her spare time – or lack thereof.
