Varga accidents confirmed after ‘horrible’ Euros collision in Hungary vs Scotland

Hungary star Milos Kerkez assured fans Barnabas Varga will be “all right” after his horrific collision against Scotland at Euro 2024.

Varga, 29, was stretchered off the field after he was knocked unconscious in a mid-air clash with Scotland’s goalkeeper Angus Gunn during Hungary’s dramatic 1-0 victory in Stuttgart on Sunday evening. It later emerged he had broken several bones in his face.

A protective screen was arranged by players around the injured striker, enabling the medical team to attend to him privately. He was rushed to hospital and players including Liverpool ace and Hungary captain Dominik Szoboszlai could be seen in tears.

Following an extended delay, it was the Hungary skipper who was part of a move that saw forward Kevin Csoboth seized an injury time opportunity on the counter, ousting Scotland from the championship.

Dedicating their emotional triumph to their hospitalised teammate Varga, who was reported stable in Stuttgart’s health centre, Bournemouth left-back Kerkez posted on Instagram: “Proud of everyone and thankful for the support in the stadium and the country! Our brother will be alright because he is strong.”

The game’s standout player, Hungary winger Roland Sallai, also reflected: “It was a terrible moment to see him like that. He’ll have to go through a minor operation, but we cross our fingers for him that he can return. Naturally, it was a terrible incident. Of course, we were fighting for him in the remaining minutes and this win is dedicated to him,” reports the Mirror.

Hungary’s players were visibly shaken by the injury to their team-mate, but they managed to rally to pick up their first points of Euro 2024 and give themselves a chance of progressing to the knockout stages. Manager Marco Rossi spoke about Varga in his post-match press conference.

“What I heard from the players is that Barney looked unconscious,” he said. “Everybody was really worried about his condition and worried that the doctors arrived a bit late. Probably they didn’t realise it was a dangerous situation.”

“We can say now that Barney is not under any kind of risk. Probably, he will be operated on in the coming hours because he suffered a fracture here [points to cheek], but he’s healthy. Of course, if we will go through the competition he will not be any more part of the team.”

A statement shortly after the game from the Hungary FA read: “Barnabss Varga’s condition is stable! The player of Ferencvaros is currently in one of the hospitals in Stuttgart! We will inform you immediately if there is any news about its status!”

They later confirmed: “Several bones in Barnabás Varga’s face were broken during the collision during the match, and he also suffered a concussion. The Ferencvaros striker is most likely to undergo surgery. He spends the night in the hospital in Stuttgart. The whole team is rooting for him!”
