Erik ten Hag slams ‘complacent’ Man Utd after embarrassing Europa League draw

Erik ten Hag labelled his Manchester United squad ‘complacent’ after they fumbled a lead at the Theatre of Dreams on Wednesday.

The Red Devils had to settle for a draw in their first Europa League match, with FC Twente fighting back to level the score. Christian Eriksen’s opener was wiped out by a strike from Sam Lammers, as United struggled to score another against their Dutch opponents.

The United boss wasn’t hiding his annoyance at full-time, especially with how the game turned on its head after the break. Ten Hag was irked by how easily Twente found their equaliser.

Speaking about his side’s slack showing against the club he knows all too well, he remarked: “We are very ambitious and when you have ambition you have to perform and prove the point.

“Today, particularly in the second-half, we were too complacent. We didn’t bring it over the line and, as a team, you have to bring this,” reports the Mirror.

“You have to be consistent and keep going. In the second-half we dropped our level and gave the goal away. We can’t allow the right-back from Twente to dribble through the whole midfield and not be stopped.

“We have seen again that you have to keep going for the whole game. Once you’re 1-0 up you have to keep going and go for the second.

“For Twente, it was the game of their life. They fought for every yard, we didn’t and 99 per cent is not enough, you have to give 100 percent. You have to kill the game, you have to finish it off and kill the game.”

Christian Eriksen also admitted that FC Twente appeared hungrier for success than United, following a disappointing second-half display that led to the hosts conceding an equaliser.

Eriksen remarked: “They looked like they wanted it more than us and that can’t be right. We’re disappointed as a team. We wanted more, but it was far from good enough in the end.

“Everyone is looking at themselves. For most, everyone is a professional footballer, they know what to do and they know what can’t happen. A game like today, obviously we don’t lose, but it feels like a loss and that is something at home against Twente can’t happen.”
