Check your change for 3 uncommon cash price a mixed £3,000, skilled says
A coin expert has urged Brits to rummage through their pockets for three distinctive coins that could score them a windfall of up to £3,000. In a TikTok video, expert the Coin Collector UK revealed that these little treasures could be found among your usual shrapnel.
Taking to the video-sharing platform he advised: “These three coins are worth three thousand pounds and can be found in your change.” As reported by The Mirror, his guidance started with a 2014 £2 piece commemorating a century since the start of World War I, stamped with the iconic image of Lord Kitchener.
“There is an extremely rare error on the Lord Kitchener worth £800 pounds,” he said. “You need to check if yours doesn’t say the words ‘£2’ on the back – this is the error.”
For collectors clambering for such rarities, this so-called ‘mule error’ could make said coin a hot item at auctions, as opposed to its standard £2 counterpart. The expert then turned his attention to a 50p coin celebrating the London 2012 Olympics, specifically spotlighting the athletic prowess of a high jumper as sketched by a child.
The key is discovering the elusive 2009 edition for it to be valued significantly higher. He said: “The Olympic athletics from the Olympic series can be worth over £200. The rare version is dated 2009 on the back.
“Less than 20,000 of these were sold. Collectors will pay up to £250 pounds for one in great condition. The 2011 version is worth £2.”
He also highlighted another Olympic coin that could fetch a hefty sum: “This time the aquatics, which can be worth £2,000 plus.”
The 2011 coin, adorned with an image of a swimmer, becomes particularly valuable if it features water lines over the swimmer’s face – a detail altered in subsequent versions. “The rare original one will have lines covering the face like those on the body,” he said.
He emphasised the scarcity and value of this variant: “Very few of these were minted and they sell for crazy money because of this. Always check any of these if you find them.”
