Ruben Amorim makes Marcus Rashford promise forward of first Man Utd house sport

Ruben Amorim has promised Marcus Rashford all the help he needs to get back to his best.

Rashford has endured a miserable 18 months at Manchester United after losing his form and confidence. The striker scored just eight goals in all competitions last season, and has found the back of the net five times in 19 appearances this time round.

United have become one of the lowest scoring teams in the top flight, with Rashford taking much of the blame from supporters and critics alike. To make matters worse, Rashford has also been jettisoned by England, and was left out of the squad for the Euros in Germany in the summer.

Rashford showed signs of his old sparkle with a goal inside 80 seconds in the 1-1 draw at Ipswich Town last weekend, after operating in the No.9 position. But he went on to fade in the second half, before being eventually hauled off.

Amorim admits the team’s lack of goals is a problem, but insists he will do everything he can to help Rashford fall back in love with football again.

Amorim will take charge of his first home game as boss against Bodo/Glimt in the Europa League on Thursday.

Amorim knows the team cannot just rely on Rashford and he said: “That position (central striker) is not the best for him. He was fighting with two giants at Ipswich. But we will keep looking for solutions. He will have all the help of all the staff and fans. He is a Manchester boy.

“I think there is a concern in that (team’s lack of goals), so we have to improve as a team. We controlled the ball in the second half at Ipswich, but we were not dangerous.

“Rasmus (Hojlund) and Josh (Zirkzee) will score more goals. Amad (Diallo) has to be better nearer the goal and Bruno (Fernandes) has to score more goals.”

United captain Fernandes admits he wasn’t surprised the club sacked Erik ten Hag in favour of appointing Amorim. And he has urged his team-mates to embrace the new tactics and formation Amorim is introducing at United.

Fernandes said: “If you change a manager mid season, it’s because things are not going as you want. And if things are not going as you want, everyone has to take the blame.

“But as I’ve said before, its easier to get rid of the manager than 15 to 12 players. You always have to adapt to different ideas and different systems. You always have to adapt.

“It’s not difficult for me to attack in different positions. I try to have an understanding of the game as being the captain, the manager can give you the message from the bench to the pitch.

“Having the knowledge of every position and knowing the movements is also part of my role.”
