All video games postponed within the UK as heavy snowfall impacts Man Utd vs Liverpool
Heavy snowfall on Sunday (January 5) caused chaos in England as football fixtures up and down the country were postponed by adverse weather conditions
The UK woke up to a winter wonderland on Sunday (January 5).
Heavy snowfall left a blanket of white across the British Isles – and football fixtures up and down the country were thrown into doubt as snow caused travel chaos. Liverpool and Manchester United’s Premier League clash was the most high profile game of the day.
However, that was confirmed to be going ahead at 12pm following to safety meetings. “Today’s fixture against Manchester United will go ahead as planned,” a Liverpool statement read. “Two safety meetings were held earlier to assess the weather and travel conditions.
“We thank everyone involved in helping us to get this game on today. If you’re travelling to Anfield then please take extra care. We look forward to seeing you there.”
And the Red Devils added: “Following a second safety meeting, it has been decided that today’s match between Manchester United and Liverpool will go ahead.
“There have been snowfall and weather warnings across the North West on Sunday but it has been deemed safe for fans to attend the 16:30 GMT kick-off. Take care if you are travelling to Merseyside today, Reds.”
However other games weren’t as lucky.
Chesterfield’s clash with Gillingham was cancelled. A statement from Chesterfield read: “Following a pitch inspection, this afternoon’s fixture against Gillingham has been postponed. A new date will be announced in due course.”
While Fleetwood Town’s clash with Wimbledon was also axed. “#ftfc can confirm Sunday afternoon’s fixture against @AFCWimbledon has been postponed,” a statement said.
“Due to the fitness of the pitch & surrounding areas due to heavy snowfall a call was made following an inspection this morning.”
Over in the women’s game, Burnley’s trip to Nottingham for an FA Cup clash with Forest was postponed. “Today’s fixture against Burnley at The City Ground has been postponed. Due to heavy snowfall in the area Burnley are unable to travel safely to the fixture.
“The cup tie will now take place on Wednesday 8 January at The City Ground.”
