Putin mouthpiece warns Trump’s peace talks will fail and threat Europe combating with US

Russia and the United States have sent their top diplomatic brass to Saudi Arabia to iron out a peace deal for Ukraine – but some anticipate the talks to collapse and the war to grind on

One of Mad Vlad’s mouthpieces believes the Orange Manbaby’s bombastic attempt to secure peace in Ukraine could lead to Europe and the US falling out and fighting over the future of Nato. Sergey Poletaev, an editor and contributor to Russian media, argues Trump’s grand plan for peace will prove harder than he anticipates.

He said solving the Ukraine war is “unlike” the business deals of Trump’s world because it is “deeply entrenched in geopolitical, military, and ideological complexities”, making a quick fix “unlikely”. If the US-Russia peace talks taking place in Saudi Arabia are to fail, Poletaev argues Trump will go after Nato, which will pile pressure on the EU to respond.

They will have two options, openly confronting Trump and risking a “transatlantic crisis” or verbally agreeing to the plans while quietly sabotaging them, according to the Russian propagandist.

It comes as top Russian and US diplomats are meeting to discuss a possible peace deal in Ukraine.

Senior US figures including secretary of state Marco Rubio, National Security Adviser Mike Waltz, and special envoy Steve Witkoff are currently meeting with Russian officials in Riyadh.

Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy is expected to travel tomorrow, despite fears in Europe that efforts may be made by the two superpowers of the US and Russia to sort the matter out between themselves, effectively depriving the war-torn nation a seat at the table to discuss its own future.

President Zelenskyy, meanwhile, has said that Ukraine will not recognise any agreement that it is not part of.

European leaders, including Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, have stressed that Europe and Ukraine need to be central in discussions, with Polish foreign minister Radosław Sikorski even suggesting that Europe should use the Nobel Peace Prize, which is decided on by the Norwegian Nobel Committee, as an incentive to get Trump to keep interests beyond just those of US and Russia at the heart of discussions.

Little is concrete at this stage, but security expert Dr Matthew Powell of the University of Portsmouth has weighed in on the likelihood of a deal, whether or not it is a good thing for Europe, and whether or not British soldiers will be sent to Ukraine.

A deal, Dr Powell explained, is far from done yet, and instead what we can expect this week is likely more of a trial from both sides to work out the desires of the other.

“What we see in the talks between the United States and Russia are really talks about talks to gauge how close both nations are in terms of their initial demands and if they would be willing to engage in substantive discussions between themselves,” he said.

“Ultimately, whether peace talks go ahead or not will largely depend on the extent to which the United States is willing to support Ukraine.”
