Northumberland townhouse goes on sale for £570,000 – with individuals left baffled by the very weird lavatory

A townhouse has hit the market for £570,000 – but one ‘bizarre’ feature in the property’s ‘horrific’ bathroom has sparked online chatter.

The detached home, located on Palace Green in Berwick-upon-Tweed,  Northumberland, offers six bedrooms, two bathrooms and a spacious layout, but its unusual interior has has left social media users scratching their heads.

The property was recently showcased on the TikTok account, @housinghorrors, a popular page known for highlighting homes with unconventional or chaotic interiors.

The video, uploaded on 2 February, takes viewers on a tour of the townhouse, highlighting its charming yet outdated 1970s-style decor.

Despite its sprawling space, the home feels frozen in time, featuring vintage furnishings, carpet, and wallpaper from the era.

One photo shows a time-capsule lounge decorated with cream embroidered sofas and mint-green drapes, complete with salmon-pink walls, while the kitchen continues the retro theme, with a black-and-white tiled floor and mustard-yellow walls.

However, the room that has left most viewers confused is the bathroom – jokingly suggested by the video narrator as belonging to ‘weird sex swingers.’

The huge restroom is coated in thick red carpet, with a matching red porcelain toilet and bidet.

The most eye-catching feature, however, is the bathtub, which sits on red carpeted steps, also covered in the same material, creating an overall bizarre aesthetic.

The narrator, clearly perplexed, commented: ‘Why are there these weird steps covered in carpet? And then the actual bath is itself is also covered in carpet

However, he went on to point out another unusual addition to the bathroom – a two-seater cream sofa complete with velvet cushions.

The narrator added: ‘It’s so unusual because you’ve got the toilet there, then you’ve also got the bath, and then you’ve got the sofa opposite.

‘Can somebody please explain to me the reasoning behind the bath because I’m pulling my hair out trying to work it out.’

Dozens of viewers took to comments, where some explained the bathroom simply represents the ‘standard’ decor style of the 1970s, while others voiced concerns over hygiene implications of carpeting in a bathroom.

One person wrote, ‘It was a ‘thing’ in the late 70s,’ while another said, ‘Thats just old fashioned my grandparents used to have carpet around the bath in the 80s &90s when all homes had carpet in bathroom.’

However, one person who was forced to remove the carpet from their own bathroom, wrote: ‘My house had carpet around the bath. It absolutely stank, first thing I did was rip it out. So gross.’

Another remarked: ‘Ahhh the damp in the carpet would be horrific,’ as a second added, ‘All I can think about is all the black mold in and under the carpet.’

A third commented, ‘It’s like something out of The Shining tbh,’ while another quizzed, ‘Why would anyone put carpet in a bathroom anyway once it gets wet its going to smell.’

It comes as a listing for a detached family home in Wales has left house hunters in stitches after they noticed an eye-raising feature.

From the outside, the four-bedroom house, located in Conwy, looks like an ordinary picturesque period property.

With whitewashed walls, stained glass windows and high ceilings, the grade II listed pre-Georgian residence is seemingly perfect for those who like the finer things in life.
