Liverpool’s ‘preferrred Mo Salah alternative’ set for £33.5m bid as switch battle strains drawn
Tottenham are reportedly set to rival Liverpool for the signing of Bournemouth winger Antoine Semenyo in the summer, with both clubs looking to bolster their attacking ranks
Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly eyeing a swoop for Bournemouth star Antoine Semenyo, with a hefty £33.5m bid lined up for the summer. The Ghanaian sensation has been turning heads this season, and it’s not just Spurs who’ve got their eye on the winger. League leaders Liverpool are also in the mix as the Merseyside club potentially look ahead to life without their talismanic forward Mohamed Salah.Former Liverpool player Michael Owen has even suggested that Semenyo could fill the boots of Anfield hero Salah – if he fails to agree a new deal and decides to part ways with the Reds at the of the season. However, Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou is reportedly keen to beat Reds’ head coach Arne Slot to the punch by adding the Cherries forward to his squad, regardless of whether they make European football next season or not, as per Caught Offside.
However, Owen reckons Semenyo would be the perfect fit for Liverpool if Salah leaves after an eight-year stint on Merseyside.
“Semenyo is a brilliant player,” Owen said on Premier League Productions back in January. “He scores goals – and we don’t know if Mohamed Salah will stay or leave but, if he leaves, Semenyo should be his replacement.”
Versatile with a right foot that can shine on both wings, Semenyo has racked up nine goals and five assists across all competitions this term, reports the Express. Spurs are reportedly eyeing Semenyo as a potential replacement for Richarlison, who may be considering a move to the Saudi Pro League after his £60m transfer from Everton to Tottenham in 2022 didn’t quite hit the mark. Semenyo is thought to be open to leaving Bournemouth, who are on track to finish above Tottenham this season, with reports suggesting the former Bristol City player is keen to test himself at the top level.
While it seems that money won’t be an issue for the move, if Liverpool set their sights on Semenyo, things could get complicated for Spurs.
The Reds are having a stellar season, and their allure come the summer is expected to increase should they achieve significant success this year – a crucial factor if they need to find a replacement for Salah. Despite facing the potential departure of three key players – Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Salah – Slot’s team are currently 15 points ahead of second-placed Arsenal, although they have played one more game.
The Anfield side also have a big week coming up with the second leg of their Champions League last-16 match against PSG on Tuesday and the Carabao Cup final against Newcastle on Sunday.
Tottenham Hotspur, on the other hand, are currently languishing in 13th place in the Premier League and have been knocked out of all domestic cup competitions. Their only hope for silverware this season now lies with the Europa League.
However, they face a tough challenge against AZ Alkmaar in the round of 16 second leg after suffering a 1-0 defeat to the Dutch side in last week’s first-leg match.
