Dark facet of vacation hotspot beloved by Brits as ‘British Street’ warning issued
A local resident has taken her followers on a trip down Benidorm’s infamous “British Street” on a busy Friday night – and warned tourists of a “dark side” they may not be aware of
A local inhabitant of Benidorm, Spain has given her followers a virtual tour of the resort’s notorious “British Street” on a bustling Friday night, cautioning tourists about a “dark side” they might not be familiar with.
Calle Gerona in Benidorm is often dubbed as British Street due to its abundance of British-themed pubs and eateries that holidaymakers flock to, including the London Underground-inspired Brit Station. It’s also home to some of Benidorm’s most legendary spots like Morgan Tavern and the Red Lion.
If you’ve ever vacationed in Benidorm, it’s likely you’ve strolled down Calle Gerona.
Local dweller Ana, known as ‘Benidorm by Ana’ on YouTube where she commands an audience of over 21,000 subscribers, regularly posts content about the popular tourist destination and its environs. In a recent video titled “The DARK side of the BRITISH Street in Benidorm!”, she spotlighted Calle Gerona.
Ana embarked on her journey down Calle Gerona around 9pm on Friday, April 11, when the street was teeming with “really, really busy” holidaymakers donning “interesting” outfits, reports the Mirror.
Despite the evening being “quite chilly”, Ana observed that revellers were out in full force. She spotted several people wrapped up in jumpers and jackets, while others braved the cold in shorts, mini-skirts, and t-shirts.
Ana reckoned the sizzling temps might’ve stirred up the “weird atmosphere” she felt, which got a notch creepier when a trio of cops on motorbikes zoomed by, supposedly to scare off the “robberies” known to plague there now and then.
It wasn’t just the police adding to the odd vibes, though; Ana clocked some proper miffed-looking folks about, contributing to what she dubbed a “very, very strange vibe”. And her camera didn’t even catch half of it.
Explaining further, she said: “We’ve seen quite a lot of groups in general, not here on the street but in the back you can hear them, discussing something or arguing between each other – maybe alcohol has something to do with it, probably. But we have heard quite a few word fights.”
Amid all this, holidaymakers had their plans thrown into chaos when travel heavyweight TUI dumped flights to Lanzarote due to monsoon-like rains dunking the island. The Spanish brass called a state of emergency across the Canary Islands thanks to the weekend’s downpour.
Costa Teguise, beloved by sun-seekers, copped it big time, with folks taking to social media to share the soggy scenes. Posts showed pools drowning in dingy waters and roads buried under sludge, while some unlucky travellers found out their holidays were binned only as they rocked up at the airport.
A TUI rep chimed in, saying: “Due to the lack of alternative accommodation on the island during the busy Easter period we unfortunately had to cancel a small number of holidays departing yesterday and today.
“Customers were able to receive a full-refund or amend to another TUI holiday with a re-booking incentive. As always, the safety of our customers and colleagues is our main priority therefore TUI resort teams are working with the local authorities to find customers currently in impacted hotels, alternative accommodation or return flights back to the UK.”
