Andy Burnham says MPs are privately urging him to challenge Sir Keir Starmer for the Labour leadership, fuelling speculation he could be seeking a Westminster return.
The Manchester Mayor accused No.10 of creating a ‘climate of fear’ and said ‘wholesale change’ was required to see off an ‘existential’ threat to the ruling party.
Mr Burnham set out his vision for how to ‘turn the country around’, including higher council tax on some homes in southern England and a 50p top rate of income tax.
Sir Keir has had a bruising few weeks as two high-profile Government departures and a lag behind Reform UK in the polls spark ongoing questions about his leadership.
Housing Secretary Steve Reed dismissed suggestions that Mr Burnham could mount a challenge, adding that he had made a ‘commitment’ to serve his full term as mayor.
Other Labour figures also urged Mr Burnham to tone down his leadership ambitions – but do you think he would be a better prime minister than Sir Keir? Cast your vote.
In yesterday’s poll, Mail readers were asked: ‘Should people have to wear face masks in medical facilities, as Violet Affleck suggests?‘ Out of more than 15,000 votes, 75 per cent said ‘yes’ and 25 per cent said ‘no’.
