Ex-Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag linked with beautiful return to former membership

Erik ten Hag has been linked with a sensational return to his former club after his torrid spell with Bayer Leverkusen came to an end last month

Ex-Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has been linked with a sensational return to his former club.

Ten Hag, 55, endured a short and not-so sweet spell at Bayer Leverkusen before he was given the boot last month. And he could be set for a quick return to management at former side Ajax.

According to Dutch outlet De Telegraaf, Ten Hag could be a potential target for the Amsterdam-based side who have had a poor start to the season under current boss John Heitinga.

Ajax are reluctant to act immediately and although they’re third in the table – the board feel the frustration of the fans when it comes to Ajax’s performances.

Heitinga’s side are undefeated domestically – but they have lost both of their Champions League clashes with Inter Milan and Marseille.

The report adds that Ten Hag would be interested in a return to his old stomping ground – where he enjoyed a wealth of success during his four-year stint.

The Dutch head coach won three Eredivisie titles, two domestic Cups and made it to the Champions League semi-finals in 2019.

He would leave for United, and his career started to tumble downhill – culminating with his four month spell at Leverkusen.

A statement read: “Bayer 04 Leverkusen have parted ways with head coach Erik ten Hag. This was decided by the shareholders’ committee, the club’s supervisory body, on the recommendation of the management of Bayer 04.

“Training will be overseen by the current backroom staff on an interim basis.”

Simon Rolfes, managing director sport, said: “This decision was not an easy one for us. Nobody wanted to take this step.

“However, the past few weeks have shown that building a new and successful team with this setup is not feasible. We firmly believe in the quality of our team and will now do everything we can to take the next steps in our development with a new setup.”
