Travel chaos as a result of Storm Amy has seen a sport’s clash postponed.
Connacht’s URC showdown with Scarlets after the Welsh outfit endured travel nightmare trying to get to Ireland. Scarlets were supposed to depart from Bristol Airport at 1.30pm on Friday, but were initially informed of a 90-minute delay.
After eventually taking off, the aircraft couldn’t touch down in Dublin due to fierce winds following two unsuccessful landing attempts and was redirected to Manchester, touching down at 5.30pm.
Remarkably, the players remained stranded on the Ryanair aircraft on the tarmac at Manchester Airport more than five hours later, with scrum-half Gareth Davies posting a picture of his shattered teammate Ioan Nicholas on social media.
Saturday’s match between Connacht and the Scarlets in Galway was ultimately scrapped late on Friday evening, with the Westerners expressing they were ‘extremely disappointed’ with the outcome, reports the Irish Mirror.
They announced in a statement: “The BKT United Rugby Championship have confirmed that Connacht Rugby’s Round 2 fixture against Scarlets Rugby has been postponed.
“Connacht Rugby are extremely disappointed with this news and apologise to all our supporters and travelling fans who have bought tickets for this game.
“All tickets purchased for this game will be valid for the rescheduled fixture. Further details on this and other options will be released when the rescheduled fixture is announced.”
A statement from Scarlets read: “The BKT United Rugby Championship Round 2 fixture between Connacht Rugby and Scarlets Rugby has been postponed.
“Due to major travel disruptions and flight cancellations for the Scarlets caused by Storm Amy, the fixture which was due to take place Saturday October 4 in Galway will now be postponed to a later date.
“The BKT URC will now consider available dates with broadcasters and both clubs to reschedule the game.”
