Traffic hell as main motorway and busy street each closed as delays trigger chaos

A pair of busy major roads are closed – with diversions in place for both. Anyone hoping to travel on the M11 southbound between Junction 14 and Junction 12 this morning are in for a horrific time.

As is anyone expecting to get around the A49 with ease, as a fuel spillage after a crash has caused chaos on that stretch of road between the A4117 and A456. The former is currently close southbound after resurfacing works overran. National Highways has placed diversions on both stretches of road, however.

For the A49 issue, traffic “is being diverted by local roads,” with a more solid diversion in place for the M11 issue.

The diversion states:

  • From M11/A14 Girton Interchange exit slip road onto the A14 east.
  • Continue along the A14 passing through the A14/B1049 Interchange and A14/A10/A1309 Interchange, towards the A14/A1303 Stowcum Quy Interchange.
  • At the interchange take the first exit onto the A1303, Newmarket.
  • Continue on the A1303 towards Newmarket and the A1303/A1304 Stetchworth Toll rbt
  • At the rbt take the fourth exit onto the A1304 southwest for the M11.
  • Continue on the A1304, London Road, through Six Mile Bottom and merge onto the A11.
  • Continue on the A11, and rejoin the M11 at J9A.

A spokesman said: “The M11 in Cambridgeshire is closed southbound between J14 near (Girton) and J12 near (Grantchester, Cambridge) due to planned roadworks overrunning their pre-agreed end time of 5am.

“This is due to unforeseen additional resurfacing. It is anticipated that the works will be completed by 7am.

“If this closure impacts on your planned route, please allow extra journey time. Plan ahead, you may wish to re-route or even delay your journey.
