Lettuce Liz Truss names the ‘incompetent technocrats’ who ‘actually run Britain’

Former Prime Minister Liz Truss has claimed that the UK has been run by ‘incompetent technocrats’ for the past 30 years, with the Government chosen by voters having little real power

The individuals who truly govern Britain have been revealed by former prime minister Liz Truss – and they aren’t the politicians we vote for. Left-wing “incompetent technocrats” have controlled the UK for three decades whilst the Government elected by the public wields minimal actual authority, she claimed.

The real power brokers include Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey, Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley and Treasury mandarins, she argued. Ms Truss also alleged that Home Office barristers dictate immigration strategy whilst an organisation known as the Climate Change Committee, predominantly comprising academics, influences energy policy.

During an appearance on the Daily Expresso news programme, the ex-prime minister explained: “People think the Prime Minister is all-powerful or the Chancellor is all-powerful, and they can go in to government and just pull the levers and things will happen.

“But actually, the Government is controlled by the permanent bureaucracy, by the Civil Service. It’s them who hire and fire the people that work in the Government, they control the budgets of each government department, they make the decisions about how each policy is implemented.”

She continued: “The Bank of England governor is able to make decisions about the economy, independent of the elected government, that have massive implications for people’s lives. Lots of power that used to sit in the hands of elected people now sits in the hands of the unelected.”

The shift began nearly three decades ago with the rise of former Labour Prime Minister Tony Blair, according to Ms Truss, who stated: “Blair was the last prime minister that actually ran this country.” However, she argued that those currently in charge of Britain are not impartial experts. “They are people with an agenda who have huge amounts of unelected power.”

The former prime minister expressed his views: “They believe in net zero. They believe in mass migration.

“They believe in Keynesian economics. High tax and high spend.

“They have a worldview. They are not neutral technocrats.”

Ms Truss further added: “The Left have been very successful and now pretty much every institution has been captured.” This situation has led to voters feeling “incredibly frustrated” as their opinions are overlooked.

Speaking to host JJ Anisiobi, Ms Truss said: “They keep voting for governments that limit immigration, that will lower taxes, and governments aren’t delivering it.” She pointed out that the Conservative Party is part of the problem, having embraced the “Blairite” agenda set by Labour since David Cameron took over as Tory leader in 2005.

Ms Truss also issued a stark warning to the Tories, suggesting they could be doomed if they continue on their current trajectory – despite resistance from many of its MPs, reports the Express. When questioned about her views on Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch, Ms Truss responded: “If she started taking on those type of issues, I would be interested.

“But at present there are still too many people involved in the Conservative Party, the so-called modernisers … until she repudiates that agenda I don’t think the Conservative Party has got much future.”
