Wrexham legend factors to key motive behind Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s success

EXCLUSIVE: Wrexham have been on an incredible journey up the football pyramid under the ownership of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, and a Red Dragons icon couldn’t ask for more from the Hollywood duo

Wrexham’s journey up the football pyramid under Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney has been nothing short of spectacular.

The Red Dragons have won three successive promotions from the National League to the Championship since the Hollywood duo invested in the club, seeing Phil Parkinson lead Wrexham back onto the football map.

But the impact of the new owners reaches far beyond the football club, with the local community benefitting immensely from the input of the Hollywood stars.

Reynolds and McElhenney have invested in local clubs and have made charitable donations to struggling families in the community.

The club is almost recognisable from the one that Lee Trundle played for between 2001 and 2003, and the maverick forward has lauded the effect of the ownership.

Speaking exclusively to the Daily Star Sport, via Mighty Tips, Trundle said: “The new board have come in, they’ve done excellent.

“They’ve done everything right, they’ve backed the manager, they’ve backed the city as well, everything they’ve done.

“They’ve got involved with the community, which I think is a massive part of it. These fans, especially the Wrexham fans as well, where they’ve been starved of that success for so long.

“It’s great for them to come in, take over it, and see people who care about the club coming in and doing the right thing, so I think that it’s been brilliant for them.

“I did think that this season would be the one where it would level out a little bit because the Championship is a different league, it’s a very strong league.

“Even though I still think that they’ll be alright this season, I still think they’ll stay in the league because I think they’ve got enough quality and they’ve got that momentum behind them as well from the last few seasons.”

Trundle enjoyed plenty of success at Wrexham during his playing career, but he wishes he could feature in the current side the way that Parkinson has the team set up.

He added: “I think that especially the way Phil plays, he likes to get the ball forward early as well.

“When we talk about possession based, I know they will play a bit of football, but his sides do want to get that ball forward and go and try and attack and score goals, so I would definitely enjoy playing in that side.”
