Man Utd legend on shortlist to land first Premier League job as new Wolves supervisor

Manchester United legend Michael Carrick is reportedly one of the names on Wolves’ shortlist to replace Vitor Pereira after he was sacked by the club on Sunday

Manchester United legend Michael Carrick is one of the names reportedly on Wolves’ shortlist to be their new manager.

Wolves sacked manager Vitor Pereira with the Old Gold bottom of the Premier League table following their 3-0 defeat at Fulham on Saturday. Wolves have just two wins from 10 games, and fans had already turned on last season’s saviour.

The Molineux club have since started drawing up a shortlist for their next permanent manager, with Carrick among a number of names.

According to The Athletic, Carrick faces competition for the job from Middlesbrough boss Rob Edwards, who replaced the former England international in the Riverside hot seat after he was sacked in the summer.

Gary O’Neil is also reportedly under consideration for a shock return to the club 11 months after he was sacked with the team in 19th place, with Pereira being named as his replacement.

Carrick has been out of a job since he was dismissed by Middlesbrough. The 44-year-old was in charge for three seasons at the Riverside and was the longest serving manager in the Championship at the time of his departure.

The former midfielder was previously the caretaker manager at United following the sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in 2021, winning two and drawing one of his three games in charge.

If Carrick is to be appointed, it would be his first permanent managerial position in the top-flight and just the second of his short career in the dugout.

Pereira called Saturday’s defeat to Fulham the “worst” performance he has seen from his team and had to face the fans at full-time, who booed him and the team just a week after clashes at full-time of their last minute 3-2 defeat at home to Burnley.

Pereira has since sent a message to supporters following his sacking, he said: “It has been a privilege to manage Wolverhampton Wanderers and experience unique moments with this club and its supporters.

“I would like to thank the club’s owners for their trust, the players for their hard work and commitment over these months, and all the staff for making me feel part of the family.

“I wish the club all the best for the rest of the season.”
