Afghan refugee accused of murdering canine walker seems in court docket forward of trial subsequent summer season

An Afghan man who allegedly stabbed three people including his landlord was due to be evicted from his home when he struck, a court heard.

Safi Dawood, 22, had been told he had until the end of October to leave his annex at the home of Shahzad Farrukh and his family, the Old Bailey heard.

He is charged with one count of murder and two counts of attempted murder – including on Mr Farrukh – following a brutal triple stabbing in Uxbridge, west London last week.

Dawood sat with his head either in his hands or resting on his arms crossed on the table in front of him when he appeared at the court via videolink from Wandsworth Prison this morning for a 15-minute administrative hearing.

He wore a grey t-shirt and was accompanied by three guards.

He spoke to confirm his name as simply ‘Safi’, and to state his date of birth as 13 March 2003 having originally told the court that they were already aware of his details.

He also asked his Pashtu translator to repeat what Judge Mark Lucraft KC, the Recorder of London, said about a 14-year-old boy being among the victims.

He is accused of killing council worker Wayne Broadhurst, 49 who was out walking his dog when he stumbled across the rampage in Uxbridge on Monday October 27.

The court heard Mr Broadhurst was stabbed approximately 14 times.

Dawood has also been charged over the severe injuries suffered by a 45-year-old man, his landlord Mr Farrukh, a business consultant who lives on the road where the attack is believed to have started.

He is said to have life-changing injuries, and is expected to remain in hospital for some time.

Dawood is also charged with attempting to murder a 14-year-old boy, who cannot be named and has since been discharged from hospital, and possession of an offensive weapon.

He was further remanded in custody ahead of a plea hearing at the Old Bailey on January 26 next year.

A provisional trial date has been listed for July next year, lasting up to three weeks.

The judge has ordered a psychiatric report to be carried out.

Dawood arrived in the UK in a lorry five years ago and was granted asylum and indefinite leave to remain in 2022, according to the Home Office.

The Metropolitan Police said Mr Broadhurst was treated for stab wounds but died at the scene.

It added Dawood and Mr Broadhurst ‘were not known to one another’.

It added: ‘Dawood was assessed when he entered custody and later required hospital treatment after suffering a medical episode.’

Officers and paramedics were called to reports of a triple stabbing at about 5pm, and the casualties were treated at the scene for stab wounds.

Mr Broadhurst worked for Greener Ealing, which provides sustainable waste disposal and grounds maintenance services to Ealing Council.

Managing director Katarina Pohancenikova said: ‘This is a devastating loss. Wayne was a dedicated member of our team who made a real contribution.’
