Meredith Kercher cops looking for girl who might have ‘very important data’ on her dying
Prosecutor Giuliano Mignini ash received information from a “reliable” source that a Bulgarian woman may hold more information on the high-profile case
Italian authorities are hunting for a woman who has crucial clues about the 2007 murder of British student Meredith Kercher. Prosecutors got a tip-off that the Bulgarian female was in Perugia where the tragic student, 21, was stabbed to death.
She is believed to have fled Italy days after the killing. Giuliano Mignini, the prosecutor who led the murder probe, said he received information from a “reliable” source.
He said the person of interest may not be a suspect in the killing but could be a witness. The prosecutor said: “It’s someone I’ve never considered before”, adding the new lead was potentially “very important for the whole case.”
He said: “There are indications that this person may be implicated.”
Meredith’s roommate Amanda Knox – nicknamed Foxy Knoxy – and her ex-boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito were initially convicted of the murder. But the pair’s convictions were later quashed by Italy’s highest court in 2015.
The British family’s lawyer Francesco Maresca said: “Once again, after so much time, people are talking about new hypotheses and other people who may have been involved, and on all this the family asks for more information.”
He added the family were keen to keep alive the memory of Meredith, saying: “We remember once again Meredith’s lovely smile and her happiness at arriving in a country where she should have been studying history, art and beauty and where instead she met her end.”
The only person convicted of the sexual assault and murder was Rudy Guede. He was convicted after his DNA was found at the crime scene.
In 2021 he was released from jail after serving 13 years of a 16-year sentence. Guede, from the Ivory Coast, now faces claims of sexually assaulting an ex-girlfriend, 25, near Rome. His trial in Perugia began on Tuesday.
