CCTV reveals horror second of deadly automobile crash as cops hunt pair who fled
Disturbing CCTV shows a fatal car crash in which two people callously fled the scene leaving their friend to his fate, as police appeal to the public for information and videos to identify the driver
Police have released shocking footage showing the moment two cars collided in a horror fatal crash – before two people fled the wreckage leaving their friend to die.
Emergency services rushed to the scene on Stratford Road in Sparkhill, Birmingham, following the horrific smash at just before 11.50pm on August 1 this year. Disturbing CCTV captured the moment of impact as a black Audi ploughed head-on into a blue Vauxhall Meriva as it attempted to turn into Ladypool Road.
A 22-year-old man who was a passenger in the Vauxhall Meriva was taken to hospital but sadly died as a result of his injuries. Four other people were seriously hurt.
West Midlands Police are now trying to trace the driver of the Meriva and another passenger who callously fled the scene leaving behind their pal.
The independent charity Crimestoppers has also issued a £20,000 reward for anyone who can provide information leading to finding those responsible for the late night crash.
In newly-released CCTV, around 40 people can be seen rushing to the scene upon hearing the collision to pull the occupants from both cars and help the injured.
A force spokesperson said: “We are issuing a fresh appeal for witnesses and dashcam footage after a man tragically died following a collision in Stratford Road, Birmingham.
“The Vauxhall Meriva was captured on CCTV turning out of Long Street onto Stratford Road before attempting to turn into Ladypool Road when the collision took place.
“We still need to identify the two other occupants from the Vauxhall Meriva, including the driver and are appealing for anyone with information to get in touch.”
Detective Sergeant Paul Hughes, from the force’s Serious Collision Investigation Team, said: “We know that many people helped the occupants from the Meriva and we’re keen to speak to them.
“We’re also aware that some people captured footage in the aftermath of the collision and we’d ask for any material which may assist our investigation to be sent to us.
“A local man has lost his life and we desperately want to get answers for his family.
“Any information that you provide could be vital in getting those answers. I would urge anyone with information to please do the right thing and get in touch.”
Appealing directly to the two people who fled the scene, he added: “You left your friend here seriously injured.
“Maybe you didn’t know what happened, but you do now. Now is the time to come forward and do the right thing, come and speak to us and tell us your side of events.
“Lets help that victim, help his family, and get the answers everyone deserves.”
