Millions have been compelled right into a profession they hate and need they grew to become footballers as a substitute

Unhappy employees say they wouldn’t do the job they’re in now if they had their time again. More than four in 10 would have chosen a more creative occupation

Millions of unhappy Brits say they were forced into a career they now hate.

Discontented workers say that if they had their time again they would not do the job they are now, with half of working Brits saying they felt forced down a career path that wasn’t their choice.

Some 50% of those asked said they didn’t make the choice themselves with as many as one in four saying their job makes them unhappy.

A massive 43% insist they would have chosen a much more creative occupation if they’d been given the opportunity, while one in five admitting they feel resentful about being shoehorned into a certain career.

Parental pressure and unhelpful career advice from school are just some of the reasons we didn’t get the career we wanted according to the survey, carried out by international schools group, ACS. One in six were told that being a professional footballer was out of reach, while 14% were told it would be impossible to make it as a singer.

Other careers Brits were told were out of reach, include becoming an actor, an artist, doctor or pilot. Two thirds of those asked also fear that the landscape isn’t changing – saying they believe the current UK exam system pushes kids to pick subject choices too early, limiting future study and career options.

Martin Hall, Head of School, ACS Hillingdon said: “The research shows that the nation’s workers feel like they have been short changed when it comes to their careers, and the next generation fear the current system will send them the same way.

“What’s concerning is that the same system that created these regrets is still in place. Our research shows 66% of parents believe the English exam system forces children to narrow their subject choices too early – at 14 and 16 – often before they understand what opportunities exist.”
