What Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike posted after Liverpool win over Real Madrid speaks volumes
Liverpool look to have put their recent poor form behind them after beating Real Madrid 1-0 in the Champions League at Anfield on Tuesday night
Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike both impressed as Liverpool beat Real Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday night. Alexis Mac Allister scored the only goal of the game when he headed home a Dominik Szoboszlai free-kick.
Mac Allister’s second-half header capped a dominant performance as Arne Slot’s side ended Real’s 100 per cent Champions League record. Trent Alexander-Arnold was also given a fiercely hostile reception on his return to Anfield when he came on as a substitute in the final 10 minutes.
The atmosphere was electric inside Anfield, and both Wirtz and Ekitike shared similar messages on social media in the aftermath.
“Great performance, thank you for the incredible atmosphere Anfield,” the Germany international wrote on Instagram.
While taking to the same social media platform, Ekitike said:“Thanks Anfield.”
Reacting to the win, Reds skipper Virgil van Dijk told Amazon Prime: “I think there was a lot of energy and a lot of hard work.
“Obviously, they have won 14 in the last 15 – they have a lot of quality. We know their strengths. So, we had to be spot on in everything we do.
“I think we performed our gameplan perfectly. It is easy to say now because we won twice in a row – in a world of chaos you have to stay calm and see perspective of things.”
Before he continued: “I am living with players that might have been affected by it. If you lose a game for Liverpool – four, five games – there is criticism – that is normal in a sense.
“It is over the top at times. I think it’s because we live in the world of so many platforms, so many people can say stuff, and it can be picked up. Ex-players that played at the highest level had difficult moments as well.
“I want to perform for the team, the club and everyone who supports us through thick and thin.”
