Boy, 5, savaged in canine assault at UK park in ‘each guardian’s nightmare’
A young boy has been left with lifelong scars after a horrific dog attack while he was enjoying playing in a park.
The five-year-old was at a park on Schofield Street, Mexborough, Sheffield, when an dog off his lead, thought to be of a bull breed, “aggressively approached” him.
The beast then launched a savage attack on the child’s face, inflicting injuries to his eye, ears and cheeks.
A spokesperson for South Yorkshire Police lamented: “What should have been an enjoyable experience for a little boy has turned into every parent’s nightmare.
“The boy was taken to hospital for treatment, and it is believed his injuries could cause lasting physical scars.”
Police were summoned to the scene and a 29-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of owning a dangerously out-of-control dog.

“He’s since been released on bail, while the offending canine is currently housed in police kennels, reports Yorkshire Live.
Inspector Steve Usher commented: “This incident should never happen and could have be avoided by responsible ownership.
“If you are in an area with children who can act in excitable and unpredictable ways, there should be no reason a dog should be off its lead.”
He added, “Being a responsible owner is the difference between dogs causing fear and harm in our community. Please do your part and act.
“Do not think it won’t happen to you, or your dog would never do that. Any dog has the potential to cause injury.”
The force issued a stern warning to dog walkers:.
- Walk your dog on a lead in public spaces
- Beware of other dogs while out walking
- Ensure your dog is microchipped and wearing a collar
- Understand your dogs behaviour and tailor your routes
